Sleep on a Rooftop in Notel’s Airsteam Trailers—Melbourne, Australia

First things first, welcome to my new series, “The Duvet Diaries.” I get a lot of questions from you guys about the best places to stay around the world, so I thought it was about time I review my favorite hotels, guesthouses and resorts here on my blog so you can decide for yourself whether it suits you!

Well, I definitely started my series with the absolute best hotel you could ask for—a space that oozes style and quirkiness, which manages to sum up Melbourne’s culture perfectly.

Notel is a quirky new design concept that has just landed on the rooftops of Melbourne. Located on Flinders Lane just next to the iconic laneways, this place reaks of hipster and is quintessentially ‘cool.’

I took the time to hear the story from the owner himself on how the ‘hotel with a difference’ was born. James has owned the car park downstairs for quite some time and used to take friends up to the rooftop to hang out. He knew the space had potential and had a niggling thought that one day he should do something cool with the space. He had absolutely no idea what he could do that hadn’t already been done! Then the light bulb-moment of putting caravans on the rooftop was born and here we are at the amazingly retro chic Notel!

The Concept
You probably didn’t know you wanted to stay in an Airstream trailer on a Melbourne rooftop… but once you do it you’ll realize why it should have been at the top of your bucket list the whole time. These 1970s original Airstream trailers were airlifted by cranes onto the top of a car park in the city center of Melbourne. They were then decked out using only the finest locally-sourced products to transform them into the epic retro hotel space we call Notel! The design is retro, sleek and modern with special perks including an iPad pro (with Netflix), fully stocked (and free!) mini bar, a super comfy bed and even a hot tub if you stay in the airstream with benefits.

The Experience
I absolutely loved the mystery around the whole experience at Notel—from my check in instructions being limited to ‘remember roller doors don’t always roll,’ to not having a clue how to find the actual entrance. The speakeasy vibe is the bread and butter of why this space works so well. It seems as if you almost stumbled on a well-kept secret.

If you have an old school Nokia then you’re certainly not welcome here! It’s smartphone-access only because the key to your room will be sent to an app on your phone. Top tip: Make sure your phone doesn’t run out of charge whilst you’re out and about or you’ll be testing the safety of the airstreams in no time!

Being just a stones throw away from the laneways means that you can feast on anything from Mediterranean to bloody good Melbourne-burgers whilst you’re there and you have tons of cool bars at your disposal. The location really couldn’t be anymore perfect and there’s even a handy carpark downstairs.

Overall, I absolutely loved my stay at Notel… It took a lot of effort to peel me off the bed (or cloud as I liked to call it). So if you’re one for a quirky concept in an Instagrammable location, then Notel is the place for you!
